1971 Topps #261 Darold Knowles

About Darold Knowles
Oakland acquired Knowles and Mike Epstein on May 8, 1971, for Frank Fernandez, Paul Lindblad and Don Mincher. Knowles made 43 appearances for the Athletics, winning five games and saving seven; four of 35 inherited runners scored against him. His second-series #261 still carries his Washington affiliation.
Darold Knowles pitched sixteen major-league seasons for seven franchises, making 765 appearances and recording 143 saves with a 3.12 ERA. The left-hander reached 71 appearances and 27 saves for Washington in 1970. With Oakland he became the first pitcher to appear in all seven games of a World Series, saving Games 1 and 7 against the Mets in 1973. He finished that Series with 6 1/3 innings and no earned runs, retiring Wayne Garrett for the final out. After his playing career, Knowles coached pitchers in the Cardinals, Phillies, Pirates and Blue Jays organizations, including eight years as a roving instructor for St. Louis. He was inducted into the Florida State League Hall of Fame and, in 2012, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
