1971 Topps #167 Tom Grieve

About Tom Grieve
Grieve played a night game for Denver on July 4, 1970, caught a flight to New York and reached the park about an hour before a doubleheader, where he made his debut in the starting lineup. He got his first two big-league hits off Sam McDowell, hit his first home run on July 9 off Rick Austin, and finished at .198 with three home runs in 47 games. His #167, from the second series, is the rookie card and lists him with Washington.
Tom Grieve was an outfielder who played nine major league seasons, 1970 through 1979, for the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers, then the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals. The Senators took him sixth overall in the 1966 draft out of Pittsfield High School in Massachusetts, and he held out until they agreed to let him finish his college degree at Michigan. His best year was 1976 with Texas, when he hit .255 with a team-leading 20 home runs and 81 RBI. He finished with a .249 average, 65 home runs and 254 RBI in 670 games, and he was known as a streaky hitter who also played winter ball in Venezuela. The initials T-A-G gave him the nickname Tag, and his place on the Rangers' 1972 inaugural team, then in the front office and the broadcast booth, made him Mr. Ranger. He became Rangers general manager in 1984 at age 36, the youngest in the majors, and held the job until 1994, then worked as the team's television color commentator from 1995 through 2022. The Rangers inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2010.
