1971 Topps #326 Richie Scheinblum

About Richie Scheinblum
Topps carded Scheinblum with Washington on #326, a third-series issue. In 1970 he hit .337 with 24 home runs for Triple-A Wichita and led the league in runs, hits and RBI. In 1971 he took the American Association MVP award at Denver with a league-leading and Triple-A-record .388, 25 home runs and 108 RBI. He also played 27 games for the Senators, batting .143.
Richie Scheinblum was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors between 1965 and 1974, playing for the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. A C.W. Post College graduate, he broke in with Cleveland as a September call-up in 1965 and spent several seasons shuttling between the Indians and their Portland farm club before piecing together a full-time role. His best year came in 1972 with Kansas City, where he hit .300, made the American League All-Star team, and was named the Royals' Player of the Month in August. That September he wore a black armband to honor the Israeli athletes killed at the Munich Olympics. He finished his career with a .263 average, 13 home runs and 127 RBI over 462 games, and later played two seasons in Japan for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He was one of a small handful of Jewish players in the majors during his era.
