1971 Topps #33 Del Unser

About Del Unser
Del Unser won back the starting center field job in 1971, the last season of major-league baseball in Washington until 2005. He played 153 games and hit .255 with 9 home runs and 41 RBI. On December 2, 1971, ahead of the franchise's move to Dallas-Fort Worth, he went to Cleveland with Denny Riddleberger, Terry Ley and Gary Jones for Roy Foster, Rich Hand, Mike Paul and Ken Suarez. His 1971 Topps card is #33, from the first series, with the Senators.
Del Unser was a lefty-hitting outfielder who spent 15 seasons in the majors from 1968 to 1982, breaking in with the Washington Senators and finishing second in AL Rookie of the Year voting his first year. He later played for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Montreal Expos, moving among those clubs in a string of trades. Unser led the American League in triples in 1969 and finished his career with 1,799 games, 1,344 hits and 87 home runs. He played a part in the Phillies' 1980 World Series championship, driving in runs with pinch-hit doubles in Games 2 and 5 against the Kansas City Royals. Unser's father, Al Unser, played in the majors and also managed and scouted, and Del followed a similar path after his playing days, working for the Phillies as a coach, farm director and scout. His college play at Mississippi State earned him induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
