1971 Topps #11 Elliott Maddox

About Elliott Maddox
Maddox arrived in Washington in the trade after the 1970 season that sent Denny McLain to the Senators, and he hit .217 with 1 home run and 18 RBI. He still led American League outfielders in range factor, Ted Williams predicted big things from him, and on September 30 he drove in the final run in franchise history. This rookie card, #11 from the first series, shows him with the Senators.
Elliott Maddox was a right-handed outfielder and third baseman who played 11 major league seasons, 1970 to 1980, for the Tigers, Senators, Rangers, Yankees, Orioles and Mets. He was a first-round pick of Detroit in the 1968 secondary draft after hitting .467 for Michigan, and in September 1970 he returned to Michigan for his senior year while still playing for the Tigers 40 miles away. His glove was the calling card: Ted Williams called him perhaps the best defensive center fielder in the American League, and in 1974 he led AL center fielders in assists and double plays. That same year he hit .303 for the Yankees and scored a career-high 75 runs. A fall on the wet Shea Stadium outfield on June 13, 1975 damaged his knee and led to two operations, and he later sued over the injury, losing at New York's highest court in 1985. He finished with a .261 average over 1,029 games. After baseball he became an investment banker, later a Yankees hitting instructor in 1990 and 1991, and in 2004 was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
