About Paul Casanova

Casanova batted .203 in 94 games for Washington in 1971. He said he learned about catching from John Roseboro, his teammate in 1970. He also credited Earl Battey of Minnesota and adopted Battey's practice of throwing out runners from his knees. His 1971 Topps Senators card was #139 in the second series; his Topps coin was #146.

Cuban catcher Paul Casanova played ten major league seasons for Washington and Atlanta from 1965 through 1974. He entered Cleveland's organization in 1960, toured with the Indianapolis Clowns in 1961, and signed with Washington in 1962 after a brief stay in the Cubs' system. He became the Senators' regular catcher in 1966 and was an All-Star in 1967. During his major league career, he threw out 40 percent of runners attempting to steal against him. Traded to Atlanta for Hal King in December 1971, he caught Phil Niekro's no-hitter on August 5, 1973. Casanova finished with a .225 average, 50 home runs and 252 RBI in 859 games. After baseball, he founded an academy at his Florida home, where he and former shortstop Jackie Hernandez instructed young players. He died in 2017.
