1971 Topps #34 Sandy Vance

About Sandy Vance
Vance won his first start of 1971, on April 12 against the Cubs, but winter ball in the Dominican Republic that ran into January had left his arm tired and sore. Four days later he left in the second inning against Houston, got one more start through June, and was sent back to Spokane. He finished 2-1 with a 6.92 ERA in 10 games. His rookie card, #34 from the first series, has him with the Dodgers.
Sandy Vance was a right-handed pitcher who reached the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1970 and was gone from baseball by 1973. At Stanford he went 15-0 as a sophomore. In the summer of 1966 he threw three no-hitters for the Humboldt Crabs and was named the National Baseball Congress Sandlotter of the Year. The Dodgers took him in the second round of the June 1968 secondary draft and he signed for $28,500, then went 14-3 at Ogden under Tommy Lasorda. Called up in April 1970 to replace the injured Bill Singer, he lost his debut to Tom Seaver and the Mets, won his next start, and finished 7-7 with a 3.13 ERA, earning Dodger Rookie of the Year honors. Arm trouble ended it. He pitched ineffectively at Spokane and Albuquerque and was released from Class A Bakersfield on May 25, 1973. His major-league line was 9-8 with a 3.83 ERA in 141 innings. He later built a career in land planning and landscape architecture, and Stanford and the Humboldt Crabs both inducted him into their halls of fame.
