The story on this card
Valentine made the Dodgers out of spring training despite knee surgery in January. He got his first major league hit on April 25 against Cincinnati, an RBI single off Milt Wilcox that scored Steve Garvey, and finished at .249 in 101 games. Card #188 is a Rookie Stars card shared with Mike Strahler, a rookie card for both, from the second series. Bobby Valentine played utility roles for five clubs from 1969 to 1979, then managed the Rangers, the Mets, the Chiba Lotte Marines and the 2012 Red Sox. His 2000 Mets reached the World Series.
Strahler pitched in six games for the Dodgers in 1971, 12 2/3 innings in all, and posted a 2.84 ERA. His first card, #188, is a second-series Rookie Stars issue shared with Bob Valentine, with both men printed as Dodgers; it is the rookie card for each of them. Tall right-handed pitcher from Chicago who worked for the Dodgers from 1970 to 1972 and the Tigers in 1973. He started 13 of his 53 games, finished 6-8 with a 3.57 ERA, and was traded to Milwaukee for Ray Newman in December 1973.
