About Joe Moeller

Moeller worked 31 games for the 1970 Dodgers, 19 of them starts, and pitched 135 1/3 innings. He finished 7-9 with a 3.92 ERA and four saves. Al Campanis, the Dodgers' scouting director, had called him "the best prospect I've ever seen." Card #288, in the third series, lists him with Los Angeles.

Joe Moeller was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire major-league career, 1962 through 1971, with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The club signed him out of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach in June 1960, after his father negotiated a combined $100,000 bonus for Joe and his brother Gary with owner Walter O'Malley; Joe's share was around $75,000. At 6-foot-5 he drew comparisons to Don Drysdale for his build and pitching style. Injury kept undoing him: arm trouble, a separated and then dislocated left shoulder, back and groin problems, and an estimated 60 cortisone shots in fewer than 600 big-league innings. Two seasons, 1963 and 1965, brought him no major-league work at all. He finished 26-36 with a 4.01 ERA and 307 strikeouts across eight seasons. After earning a physical education degree in 1977, he coached for Cleveland and at USC, worked in the Dodgers' public affairs bureau from 1988 to 1999, and scouted for the Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins.
