1971 Topps #287 Mike Fiore

About Mike Fiore
Mike Fiore was hitting .181 with four RBI in 25 games for Kansas City when the Royals sent him to Boston on May 28, 1970, for infielder Tommy Matchick. In 1971 spring training he was among the Red Sox leaders in batting average, home runs and RBI, and manager Eddie Kasko planned to use him as a pinch-hitter and fill-in at first base. Card #287, a third-series issue, carries the Red Sox name.
Michael Gary Joseph Fiore, a Brooklyn native and Lafayette High School star, signed with the New York Mets in 1962 before Baltimore claimed him in the first-year player draft. A left-handed-hitting first baseman, he spent five years in the Orioles' system, twice losing time to military duty, before debuting in the majors in September 1968. Kansas City selected him in the expansion draft that fall, and he became the Royals' first-string first baseman in 1969, hitting the first home run in franchise history. He later played for Boston, St. Louis and San Diego, closing his major-league career in July 1972. Fiore then played Triple-A ball through 1978 and finished with a .991 career fielding percentage across all levels. He later spent about 20 years as a dispatcher in the school transportation department in Mineola, New York.
