About Billy Conigliaro
Billy Conigliaro played all three outfield spots in 1970, mostly left, and hit .271 with 18 home runs and 58 RBI. His seven assists as a left fielder were fifth in the American League. Card #114, from the first series, shows him with the Red Sox and carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy cup. Tony was traded to the Angels after that season, and Billy, a late signer who came to terms in late February, hit .262 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI in 1971.
William Michael Conigliaro, born August 15, 1947 in Revere, Massachusetts, was an outfielder who played five major league seasons for the Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics from 1969 to 1973. He was the younger brother of Tony Conigliaro, and the Red Sox drafted him in the first round, fifth overall, in the 1965 inaugural MLB draft. After four minor league seasons he debuted in 1969 and became a regular in 1970, when he and Tony combined for a then-record 54 home runs by brothers on the same team. A ten-player trade sent him to Milwaukee after the 1971 season, and he later played for Oakland, reaching the 1973 American League Championship Series and World Series. He batted right and threw right, standing 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. He finished his career with a .256 batting average, 40 home runs and 128 RBIs over 347 games. He died in 2021 at age 73.
