The story on this card
Montgomery shares #176 with Doug Griffin, both pictured with the Red Sox in a second-series Rookie Stars pairing, and it is the rookie card for each man. It followed his September 1970 call-up, when he hit .179 in 22 games. Boston added Duane Josephson over the winter to catch, but injuries opened playing time and in 1971 Montgomery got into 67 games, hitting .239 with 24 RBI. Boston Red Sox backup catcher from 1970 to 1979, mostly behind Carlton Fisk. He pinch-hit in Game Seven of the 1975 World Series, was the last major leaguer to bat without a helmet, and later called Red Sox games on television.
Griffin hit .127 in 18 games with the Angels in 1970 before the Red Sox acquired him in a trade. Rookie Stars #176 pairs him with Bob Montgomery, both printed with Boston, and it is the rookie card for each man. In 1971 Griffin hit .244, was named the club's rookie of the year and placed fourth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. Doug Griffin was the Red Sox regular second baseman from 1971 until mid-1975, a defense-first player who won the 1972 Gold Glove. He came to Boston in the Tony Conigliaro trade and was slowed by broken hands and two beanings.
