1971 Topps #32 Jerry DaVanon

About Jerry DaVanon
DaVanon hit .111 (2-for-18) in 11 games for the 1970 Cardinals, spending most of that year at Triple-A Tulsa, and on November 30 St. Louis sent him to the World Series champion Orioles for Moe Drabowsky. Card #32, in the first series, still lists him with the Cardinals. He played all of 1971 in Baltimore, batting .235 in 38 games behind Davey Johnson, Mark Belanger and Brooks Robinson.
Jerry DaVanon was a utility infielder who played parts of eight major league seasons with the San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles, California Angels, and Houston Astros. A product of Hoover High School in San Diego, he played at San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, and Westmont College before the Cardinals drafted him in a 1966 special-phase draft. He reached the majors with the expansion Padres, who had him on their first Opening Day roster in 1969. He played for five major league clubs, with the Cardinals acquiring him by trade three separate times, and settled in as a reserve who filled in at shortstop, second base, and third base. His best season came in 1976 with Houston, when he batted .290 with 20 RBI in 61 games while spelling Roger Metzger and Rob Andrews. He finished with a .234 career average over 262 games. After his release in 1977, he retired and made his home in Houston. He is the father of former big-league outfielder Jeff DaVanon.
