The story on this card
The 1970 National League wins board on 1971 Topps #70, a League Leaders card from the first series, had a tie at the top. Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals went 23-7 and Gaylord Perry of the San Francisco Giants went 23-13, while Fergie Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs followed at 22-16. Perry also led the league with 328 2/3 innings, ahead of Jenkins's 313 and Gibson's 294. Gibson and Jenkins each struck out 274 batters that year, with Perry at 214.
Bob Gibson pitched all seventeen of his seasons for the Cardinals. A two-time Cy Young winner and two-time World Series Most Valuable Player, he posted a 1.12 earned run average in 1968. Hall of Fame, 1981. Giants right-hander Gaylord Perry had shared a pitching staff with his brother long before professional baseball. At Williamston High School, Gaylord and Jim threw consecutive shutouts to sweep a best-of-three state championship series. Fergie Jenkins was the control artist at the front of the Cubs rotation, winning 20 games in six straight seasons and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award on his way to 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and a 1991 Hall of Fame plaque.
