About John Cumberland

Cumberland opened 1970 on the Yankees roster and made 15 appearances through July 19, eight as a starter. After a month at Triple-A Phoenix he was recalled to San Francisco in September and won both his decisions in relief, allowing no earned runs over 9 2/3 innings. He finished 1970 at 5-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 22 games. His 1971 Topps card, #108 in the first series, lists him with San Francisco.

John Cumberland was a left-handed pitcher from Westbrook, Maine who played a season of college ball at the University of Maine before rising through the Yankees system, where he went 26-20 for Triple-A Syracuse from 1967 to 1969. He reached the majors with the New York Yankees in 1968. Traded to the San Francisco Giants in July 1970 for Mike McCormick, he had his best stretch in the majors, with personal bests in 1971, when he went 9-6 with a 2.92 ERA as the Giants won the National League West. That October he started Game 2 of the NLCS against the Pittsburgh Pirates, working between future Hall of Famers Gaylord Perry and Juan Marichal in the rotation, but was charged with the loss. He also pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and closed his six-year, four-team career with the California Angels in 1974. After his playing days he spent 23 years coaching in professional baseball, including the Mets' farm system and stints as pitching coach or bullpen coach for the Red Sox and Royals. He is a member of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
