1971 Topps #325 Juan Marichal

About Juan Marichal
Marichal went 12-10 for the Giants in 1970 with a 4.12 ERA. He struck out 123 in 242 2/3 innings, with 14 complete games. Card #325 carries his San Francisco portrait. He went 18-11 with a 2.94 ERA in 1971 and made the All-Star team. In the NLCS he struck out 6 Pirates in 8 innings but took the loss in his only decision.
Juan Marichal, the Dominican Dandy, pitched sixteen major league seasons from 1960 to 1975, all but the last two for the San Francisco Giants. Born October 20, 1937 in the village of Laguna Verde, he learned the game from an older brother using golf balls sewn inside cloth and bats cut from tree branches. Across the 1960s he won 191 games, more than any pitcher in baseball, with Bob Gibson second at 164. He won twenty or more six times, every one of those years carrying an ERA under 2.50 and better than 200 strikeouts, and he led the National League in wins twice, complete games twice, shutouts twice and ERA once. He was named to nine All-Star teams, posted a 0.50 ERA in eight All-Star appearances and was Most Valuable Player of the 1965 game. On August 22, 1965 he struck Dodgers catcher John Roseboro with his bat at Candlestick Park, setting off a brawl and drawing a suspension and a then-record National League fine. The two later became close friends, and Roseboro's public forgiveness helped carry him to Cooperstown on the third ballot. He retired with 243 wins, 244 complete games and a 2.89 ERA, and in 1983 became the first Dominican-born player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
