1971 Topps #19 Skip Pitlock

About Skip Pitlock
Pitlock's 1970 debut came on June 12, when he took the loss against Bob Gibson and the Cardinals. His best game that summer was a complete-game win on August 3 over the Dodgers, with two unearned runs allowed and nine strikeouts. He finished 5-5 with a 4.66 ERA in 15 starts, then spent 1971 at Phoenix, increasingly used in relief. His rookie card, #19 in the first series, shows him with the San Francisco Giants.
Skip Pitlock was a left-handed pitcher for the San Francisco Giants in 1970 and the Chicago White Sox in 1974 and 1975. His herky-jerky delivery deceived hitters and produced 124 strikeouts in 192 2/3 career innings. Born Lee Patrick Thomas Pitlock in Hillside, Illinois, he attended Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst and pitched at Southern Illinois University before the Giants took him in the 11th round of the 1969 draft. He went 10-2 with a 2.20 ERA in his first pro season. The Giants traded him to the White Sox for Chuck Hartenstein and Glenn Redmon on February 8, 1973. In 1974 he worked from the Chicago bullpen and earned his only career save on June 19 against Cleveland. Oakland acquired him with Stan Bahnsen on June 15, 1975, for Dave Hamilton and Chet Lemon. He finished his major league career 8-8 with a 4.53 ERA in 59 games.
