1971 Topps #96 Joe Hague

About Joe Hague
Manager Red Schoendienst said going into 1970 that Hague would be his starting first baseman. Hague batted .271 with 14 home runs and 68 RBI. On May 29 he had four hits and five RBI in a 9-2 win over the New York Mets. His 1971 Topps card is #96, from the first series.
Joe Hague was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder from Huntington, West Virginia, who grew up in El Paso, Texas, and starred at the University of Texas before signing with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965. He worked his way up through Cedar Rapids, Arkansas and Tulsa, twice leading or tying for the club lead in home runs, and debuted with the Cardinals in September 1968. His best season came in 1970, when he set career highs in most offensive categories while splitting time between first base and the outfield. Traded to the Cincinnati Reds in May 1972 for Bernie Carbo, he appeared in that year's National League Championship Series and World Series. A dislocated bone in his hand cut short his final season in 1973. Over six major league years he batted .239 with 40 home runs and 163 RBIs in 430 games. He died of cancer in San Antonio in 1994 at age 50.
