The story on this card
The 1970 National League RBI race belonged to Johnny Bench, whose 148 runs batted in set a Reds franchise record. Tony Perez of Cincinnati and Billy Williams of the Cubs ended level at 129 apiece. Bench also led the majors with 45 home runs and took the league MVP award, with Williams second in that vote and Perez third. The Reds won 102 games, swept Pittsburgh in the NLCS and lost the World Series to Baltimore in five games. Williams drove in his 129 runs with 42 home runs and a .322 average. The card is 1971 Topps #64, in the first series, one of the League Leaders cards numbered #61-72.
Johnny Bench spent his entire 17-season career with Cincinnati. The catcher won two National League MVP awards and ten straight Gold Gloves, played on two World Series winners and entered the Hall of Fame in 1989. Tony Perez went from a Cuban sugar mill team to 23 major-league seasons and 1,652 RBI. The seven-time All-Star played first and third base for Cincinnati, later managed the Reds and Marlins, and entered the Hall of Fame in 2000. Billy Williams, the sweet-swinging left fielder who played beside Ernie Banks and Ron Santo on the Cubs, won a batting title and a Rookie of the Year award and once played 1,117 games in a row.
