About Dave Concepcion

Card #14 in the 1971 first series is Dave Concepcion's key rookie card, printed with the Cincinnati Reds. It follows a 1970 season in which Sparky Anderson started him at shortstop for his glove, replaced him with Woody Woodward after 14 errors through mid-June, then had him back in the lineup by the second half. He hit .260 in 101 games. In 1971 a sprained right thumb cost him most of the exhibition season, and he hit .205 in 130 games.

Dave Concepcion was the Cincinnati Reds' shortstop through the Big Red Machine years and played all 19 of his seasons, 1970 to 1988, in a Reds uniform. Born in Ocumare de la Costa, Venezuela, he worked as a bank teller before scout Wilfredo Calvino signed him in 1967, and he reached Cincinnati in April 1970 at 21, listed at 6 feet 2 and 155 pounds. He became the regular shortstop in 1973 and was named to nine National League All-Star teams between 1973 and 1982. He won five Gold Gloves, four in a row from 1974 to 1977 and a fifth in 1979, and two Silver Sluggers. He paired with Joe Morgan up the middle on the Reds teams that won the 1975 and 1976 World Series. At Riverfront Stadium he perfected a one-bounce throw to first off the artificial turf. In the 1982 All-Star Game in Montreal he homered off Dennis Eckersley and was named the game's MVP. He finished with 2,326 hits, 101 home runs and 321 stolen bases, moving to second and first base late in his career as Barry Larkin took over at short. Cincinnati inducted him into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2000 and retired his number 13 on August 25, 2007. He is a member of the Caribbean Series Hall of Fame.
