The story on this card
Three sluggers share the 1970 National League home run board on #66. Johnny Bench of the Reds led the majors with 45, Billy Williams of the Cubs hit 42, and Tony Perez of the Reds hit 40. Bench's 45 was then the single-season record for catchers and still stands as the National League mark for the position. The three finished first, second and third in the MVP vote, in the order Bench, Williams, Perez. Williams's 42 was a career high, and Perez's 40 came with 129 RBI. Cincinnati won 102 games and the West title. The card is part of the League Leaders subset, #61-72, in the first series of the 1971 Topps set.
Johnny Bench spent his entire 17-season career with Cincinnati. The catcher won two National League MVP awards and ten straight Gold Gloves, played on two World Series winners and entered the Hall of Fame in 1989. Billy Williams, the sweet-swinging left fielder who played beside Ernie Banks and Ron Santo on the Cubs, won a batting title and a Rookie of the Year award and once played 1,117 games in a row. Tony Perez went from a Cuban sugar mill team to 23 major-league seasons and 1,652 RBI. The seven-time All-Star played first and third base for Cincinnati, later managed the Reds and Marlins, and entered the Hall of Fame in 2000.
