The story on this card
Duffy shares this Rookie Stars card, #164 in the second series, with Cincinnati teammate Milt Wilcox, and it is the rookie card for both men. His 1971 season was split between two clubs. Sent down to Indianapolis, he balked and asked to be traded, and on May 29 the Reds dealt him with pitcher Vern Geishert to San Francisco for George Foster. Pittsburgh beat the Giants in the NLCS, and his only postseason appearance was a Game Two pinch-hit strikeout. Shortstop Frank Duffy played 1970-79 for the Reds, Giants, Indians and Red Sox. A Stanford graduate and the sixth pick of the 1967 draft, he started for Cleveland six years and led American League shortstops in fielding percentage in 1973 and 1976.
Cincinnati had as many as eight other starters competing in 1971, and Sparky Anderson, who regarded Wilcox as a five-inning pitcher, optioned him to Indianapolis. He went 2-2 with a 3.32 ERA in 18 games for the Reds. Card #164 is a second-series Rookie Stars card shared with Frank Duffy; both men are listed with the Reds, and it is the rookie card of each. Right-handed starter for the Reds, Indians, Cubs, Tigers and Mariners from 1970 to 1986. He won 17 games for the 1984 world champion Tigers and finished 119-113 with a 4.07 ERA and 1,137 strikeouts.
