1971 Topps #124 Don Gullett

About Don Gullett
Gullett made the Reds out of spring training in 1970 as a non-roster invitee and went 5-2 with a 2.43 ERA in 44 games, 42 of them in relief. On August 23 he struck out six straight Mets, tying the National League record for consecutive strikeouts by a reliever. His #124, from the first series, is the rookie card and lists him with Cincinnati.
Don Gullett was a left-handed pitcher from Lynn, Kentucky, who spent 1970 through 1976 with the Cincinnati Reds and 1977 and 1978 with the New York Yankees. He went 109-50 with a 3.11 ERA and 921 strikeouts, and was on six World Series teams, pitching in five of them, with titles for the Reds in 1975 and 1976 and the Yankees in 1977 and 1978. The Reds drafted him in the first round in 1969, and he reached the majors a year later at 19, after a three-sport high school career in which he once struck out 20 of 21 batters in a perfect game. Sparky Anderson predicted a Hall of Fame career, and writers compared him to Sandy Koufax. Injuries ended that path, and his last game came at 27. He later served as Reds pitching coach from 1993 to 2005 and entered the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2002. He died in 2024 at age 73.
