About Bruce Dal Canton

Card #168, from the second series, still shows Bruce Dal Canton with Pittsburgh after his 1970 of 9-4 and a 4.57 ERA in 41 games. On December 2, 1970, the Pirates traded him, Freddie Patek and Jerry May to Kansas City for Jackie Hernandez, Bob Johnson and Jim Campanis. With the Royals in 1971 he went 8-6 with a 3.44 ERA and started 22 games.

Bruce Dal Canton was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors an unusual way, signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of an open tryout while he was teaching high school in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. He debuted with the Pirates in 1967 and pitched eleven big league seasons for Pittsburgh, the Kansas City Royals, the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago White Sox, finishing with a 51-49 record and a 3.67 ERA over 316 games. He threw a knuckleball that Wilbur Wood helped him develop, and he led the American League in wild pitches in 1974. After retiring as a player, Dal Canton spent decades as a pitching coach in the Atlanta Braves organization, including a stint as the club's major league pitching coach and many years developing arms in the minor leagues. He died in 2008 in Pittsburgh at age 67. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the California University of Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame.
