About Ed Herrmann

In 1971 Herrmann caught 97 of his 101 games for the White Sox. He hit 11 home runs with 35 RBI and scored 32 runs. His average was .214 in 294 at-bats. Topps pictured him with Chicago on #169, a card from the second series.

Ed Herrmann was a left-handed-hitting catcher who spent eleven major league seasons, seven of them with the Chicago White Sox before finishing his career with the Yankees, Angels, Astros and Expos. Signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and drafted by the White Sox that same year, he broke in with Chicago in 1967. His best offensive season came in 1970, when he hit .283 with 19 home runs. Herrmann built a reputation as one of the American League's premier knuckleball catchers, working behind Hoyt Wilhelm, Wilbur Wood and Eddie Fisher, and he caught Wood through four consecutive 20-win seasons. He made the American League All-Star team in 1974. After his playing days ended in 1978, Herrmann scouted for the Kansas City Royals and coached youth teams in Southern California. He died in 2013 at age 67.
