On September 30, 1971, he was caught stealing second for the Senators' final out in their last game, against the Yankees.

Tommy Lee McCraw, born November 21, 1940 in Malvern, Arkansas, was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder who played thirteen seasons in the majors. He broke in with the Chicago White Sox in 1963 and played first base and the outfield for them through 1970, then moved on to the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians and California Angels before finishing his playing days with Cleveland in 1975. After retiring as a player, McCraw built a long second career as a batting coach, spending 24 seasons on major league staffs with the Indians, Giants, Orioles, Mets, Astros and the Expos/Nationals franchise, serving under manager Frank Robinson on four different clubs.
