1971 Topps #311 Lee Stange

About Lee Stange
Boston sold Stange to the White Sox on June 29, 1970. He went 1-0 with a 5.24 ERA in 16 Chicago relief appearances, pitching 22 1/3 innings. The White Sox released him on December 12. His 1971 Topps card, #311 in the third series, listed him with Chicago.
Lee Stange pitched for Minnesota, Cleveland, Boston and the Chicago White Sox during ten major-league seasons, working as both a starter and a reliever. The right-hander finished 62-61 with a 3.56 ERA and 718 strikeouts in 1,216 innings. He pitched for Boston's 1967 pennant winners. Raised in Broadview, Illinois, he helped Proviso Township High School win a state baseball championship in 1953. Knee injuries interrupted his football and basketball career at Drake, and he missed the college baseball season. He contacted Washington scout Ossie Bluege and signed with the Senators in 1957. In 1960 he won 20 games for the Wilson Tobs and received the Carolina League's Topps Minor League Player of the Year award. After his playing career, Stange coached pitchers for Oakland from 1977 through 1979 and returned as Boston's major-league pitching coach from 1981 through 1984. He then spent ten years as a Red Sox minor-league pitching instructor and later coached at Florida Tech.
