About Rich Hebner

Injuries, illness and military duty limited Hebner to 112 games in 1971. He still raised his power totals to 17 home runs and 67 RBI, batting .271. After playing in San Diego on July 24 he spent two weeks with the Marine Reserves at Camp Pendleton, and on his first day back, August 11, he had two hits, including a bases-loaded walk-off single. He went 5-for-17 in the NLCS against San Francisco. His #212 is a second-series Pirates card.

Richie Hebner spent 18 seasons in the majors, most of them at third base for the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won five NL East titles in six years and beat Baltimore in the 1971 World Series. Born in Brighton, Massachusetts, he was a star hockey player at Norwood High School before the Pirates made him their first pick, 15th overall, in the 1966 draft. The left-handed hitter got a September look in 1968, took over third base in 1969 and hit .301, and reached a career-high 25 home runs in 1973. In the 1971 postseason he homered off future Hall of Famers Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry in the NLCS, then off Jim Palmer in the World Series. In the offseason he dug graves at the cemeteries his father supervised, which earned him the nickname "Digger." He signed with the Phillies as a free agent and moved to first base, then played for the Mets, the Tigers, the Pirates again and the Cubs, finishing in 1985 as a pinch hitter. He later spent years as a hitting coach and minor league manager.
