About Mike Corkins

Eight games, all in relief, made up Corkins's 1971 with the Padres: 13 innings, 16 strikeouts and a 3.46 ERA, with no decisions. His Topps card that year is #179, from the second series of that year's issue, and it is printed with the San Diego Padres.

Mike Corkins was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire major league career with the San Diego Padres, working from 1969 to 1974 as both a starter and a reliever. The Giants signed him as an amateur free agent before the 1965 season, and San Diego took him from San Francisco with the 31st pick of the 1968 expansion draft. He started 44 games, went 19-28 with a 4.39 ERA and saved nine. His 157 games and 459 1/3 innings are the most of any pitcher who played only for the Padres. He struck out 335 batters and walked 248, and at the plate he hit five home runs in 119 at-bats. On September 22, 1969, he gave up Willie Mays's 600th home run. Corkins died in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, in 2023, at age 77.
