About Danny Coombs

Coombs pitched 19 games for the 1971 San Diego Padres, going 1-6 with a 6.24 ERA. He struck out 37 in 57 2/3 innings, and his final big-league game came on July 23. His 1971 Topps card is #126 in the first series and shows him with the Padres.

Daniel Bernard Coombs, printed as Dan on his 1960s Topps cards and as Danny on his 1971 card, was born March 23, 1942, in Lincoln, Maine. He attended Seton Hall University, where he also played basketball, and signed as an amateur free agent before the 1963 season. The 6-foot-5 left-hander debuted for the Houston Colt .45s on September 27, 1963, and stayed seven seasons in the Colt .45s/Astros organization, used almost entirely in relief; his 40 appearances in 1968 were a career high. San Diego purchased his contract on October 22, 1969, and used him almost entirely as a starter in 1970. That year he made 27 of his 42 career starts and went 10-14 with a 3.30 ERA, ninth best in the National League, for a club that lost 99 games. He finished nine seasons at 19-27 with a 4.08 ERA and 249 strikeouts.
