1971 Topps #364 Tommy Dean

About Tommy Dean
Tommy Dean's 1971 Topps #364 card, from the third series, shows him with the San Diego Padres. In his final big-league season he appeared in 41 games, 28 at shortstop and 11 at third base. He hit .114, with 8 hits in 70 at-bats. He drove in one run, scored two and stole a base. His last game came on September 30.
Tommy Douglas Dean was a shortstop born August 30, 1945, in Iuka, Mississippi. Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Buzzie Bavasi signed him out of Iuka High School for a $60,000 bonus in 1964. Bavasi, who was trying to rebuild the Dodgers around pitching, speed, and defense, considered Dean a top young prospect. Dean reached the majors with Los Angeles in 1967, playing 12 games, and spent 1968 in the minors. Nine days into the 1969 season, Bavasi, by then running the expansion San Diego Padres, acquired Dean, who became the club's most-used shortstop that year, starting 81 of its 162 games. He played three seasons in San Diego before his final game in 1971. Across four big-league seasons he played 215 games and batted .180. His 95 hits included 15 doubles and four home runs.
