About Ron Slocum

Slocum made the Padres' opening roster again in 1971 but went hitless in 18 at-bats over seven games, six of them at third base. His 1971 Topps card is #274, in the third series, and lists him with the Padres.

Ron Slocum was a right-handed utility infielder and backup catcher for the San Diego Padres in the franchise's first three seasons, 1969 to 1971. A Helix High School product, he signed with Pittsburgh, spent five seasons in the Pirates' farm system, and was the 55th pick in the National League portion of the 1968 expansion draft. He played 1969 at Double-A Elmira, then joined the Padres in September and hit .292 in 13 games, with his first two big-league hits coming on September 16 against Houston. San Diego used him at third base, catcher, shortstop and second base in nearly equal measure. He appeared in 80 games with a .150 average, 2 home runs and 16 RBI, his last on April 18, 1971. Triple-A Hawaii was his final stop, and he retired in 1972. Slocum died in 1988.
