1971 Topps #29 Don Buford

About Don Buford
Buford drew 89 walks in 1971 and posted a .413 on-base percentage, fourth in the American League, as the Orioles won a third straight pennant. He hit .300 across the playoff series against Oakland and the World Series against Pittsburgh, driving in four runs. On August 26 he became the first Oriole to strike out five times in a game, an 8-7 win over the White Sox. Card #29 comes from the first series.
Don Buford was a switch-hitting infielder-outfielder who broke in with the Chicago White Sox in 1963 after leading the International League in hitting at Indianapolis. Listed at 5-foot-7, he grew up in Southern California and starred in both football and baseball at USC before signing with Chicago. He spent his first five seasons shuttling between second and third base for the White Sox, drawing walks and running the bases well. Traded to Baltimore after the 1967 season, he began 1968 as a part-time second baseman until new manager Earl Weaver, hired that July, put him in the outfield and at leadoff. He led off for the Orioles through three straight pennant-winning seasons, scoring 99 runs in each of 1969, 1970 and 1971, and made his only All-Star team in 1971. He later played in Japan, worked as a personnel manager for Sears and returned to baseball as a manager and coach.
