1971 Topps #347 Ted Uhlaender

About Ted Uhlaender
Ted Uhlaender reached Cleveland on December 10, 1969, in the trade that sent Luis Tiant and Stan Williams to Minnesota for him, Graig Nettles, Dean Chance and Bob Miller. He started in center field in 1970 and set a career high with 11 home runs, hitting .268 in 141 games. Card #347 is a third-series issue that lists him with the Indians.
Ted Uhlaender was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who spent eight seasons in the majors with the Twins, Indians and Reds from 1965 to 1972. A Baylor product signed by Twins scout Buddy Hancken, he worked his way through the minors as a converted catcher before winning the Pacific Coast League batting title at Denver in 1965. He took over as Minnesota's starting center fielder in mid-1966 and held the job for four seasons. He led American League center fielders in fielding percentage in 1967 and hit .283, fifth in the league, in the pitcher-dominated 1968 season. Minnesota traded him to Cleveland after the 1969 season. He closed his career as a reserve outfielder with the pennant-winning 1972 Reds. He finished with a .263 career average and later coached and scouted in professional baseball. He is the father of Olympic skeleton competitor Katie Uhlaender.
