About Bob Oliver

Oliver's #57, a first-series card, shows him with Kansas City, the club he left in May 1972. He hit well through spring training, but at an April Royals luncheon the announcer Buddy Blattner introduced him as the club's home run leader, with one. The Royals traded him to the Angels for Tom Murphy on May 5. He ended the year at .269 with 20 home runs and 76 RBI.

Bob Oliver played first base, third base and the outfield during eight major league seasons with the Pirates, Royals, Angels, Orioles and Yankees. A right-handed hitter, he signed with Pittsburgh in 1963 and made his debut in September 1965. With Kansas City in 1970 he hit 27 home runs, drove in 99 runs and scored 83, all his major league career highs. He appeared in 847 games and collected 745 hits for a .256 average. He hit 94 home runs and drove in 419 runs. After playing, Oliver ran his own baseball academy in the Sacramento area and worked at Dusty Baker's baseball camp. He managed the Sacramento Steelheads in 1999.
