The story on this card
The Royals Rookie Stars card #372 prints Clemons with Kansas City, where he went 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA in 10 games in 1971. Two trades followed: to Houston in the December 1971 deal that brought John Mayberry to Kansas City, and on April 15, 1972, with Scipio Spinks to St. Louis for Jerry Reuss. He pitched three games for the Cardinals, 0-1 with a 10.12 ERA, then finished the year at Tulsa. The third-series card is a rookie card for both Clemons and Monty Montgomery. Left-handed pitcher who made 19 appearances for the Royals (1971), Cardinals (1972) and Red Sox (1974), going 2-1 with a 6.06 ERA. Drafted as an outfielder in 1968, he was converted to pitching and later taught and coached in Florida.
Card #372 in the third series of the 1972 Topps issue is the Royals Rookie Stars card, which Montgomery shares with Lance Clemons; both are shown with Kansas City, and it is the rookie card for each man. In 1972 he went 3-3 with a 3.04 ERA, starting eight of his nine games. Monty Montgomery was a right-handed pitcher out of Pfeiffer University who made 12 appearances for the Kansas City Royals in 1971 and 1972, going 6-3 with a 2.78 ERA and one shutout, a 6-0 win over the Angels.
