About Bruce Dal Canton

The Royals went 76-78 under Bob Lemon in 1972, fourth in the American League West and 16 1/2 games behind Oakland. Bruce Dal Canton finished eight games and allowed 135 hits and 29 walks. At the plate he went 4 for 41 with five sacrifice hits. He had gone 4 for 46 in 1971. Topps listed him with the Royals as #717, in the sixth series of the 1972 set.

Bruce Dal Canton was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors an unusual way, signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of an open tryout while he was teaching high school in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. He debuted with the Pirates in 1967 and pitched eleven big league seasons for Pittsburgh, the Kansas City Royals, the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago White Sox, finishing with a 51-49 record and a 3.67 ERA over 316 games. He threw a knuckleball that Wilbur Wood helped him develop, and he led the American League in wild pitches in 1974. After retiring as a player, Dal Canton spent decades as a pitching coach in the Atlanta Braves organization, including a stint as the club's major league pitching coach and many years developing arms in the minor leagues. He died in 2008 in Pittsburgh at age 67. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the California University of Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame.
