1972 Topps #360 Dave Roberts

About Dave Roberts
Roberts' 2.10 ERA in 1971 trailed only Tom Seaver's in the National League. Topps paired them with Houston's Don Wilson on first-series NL ERA Leaders #91 in 1972. The Roberts panel mistakenly pictured Danny Coombs. San Diego traded Roberts to Houston on December 3, 1971, for Derrel Thomas, Bill Greif and Mark Schaeffer. He went 12-7 for the 1972 Astros, his team on third-series #360.
Dave Roberts was a left-handed pitcher who played 13 major-league seasons for eight clubs from 1969 through 1981. Philadelphia signed him as an amateur free agent in June 1963. That summer he went 9-3 with a 1.79 ERA and 3 shutouts for Class-A Spartanburg. He later pitched in the Athletics' and Pirates' farm systems before reaching San Diego. Roberts finished his major-league career with 103 wins, 957 strikeouts and a 3.78 ERA. He was a member of Pittsburgh's 1979 World Series championship team. After baseball, he worked at Maryland's Allegany County Detention Center and coached at Potomac State College in West Virginia from 1996 through 1998.
