About this card
Cards #85-96 are the twelve League Leaders cards: the 1971 leaders in batting, runs batted in, home runs, earned run average, pitching and strikeouts, one card per league in each category with the National League card first, and three or four players on each card (#93 names four).
The story on this card
Tom Seaver's 1.76 ERA led the 1971 National League, and #91 lists him first, ahead of Dave Roberts of the Padres at 2.10 and Don Wilson of the Astros at 2.45. Seaver went 20-10 with 289 strikeouts in 286 1/3 innings. Roberts, 14-17 for a last-place San Diego club, threw 269 2/3 innings before the Padres traded him to Houston on December 3, 1971. Wilson went 16-10 in 268 innings and made the All-Star team. The card carries a photo of Danny Coombs where Roberts belongs, an error that was never corrected.
Tom Seaver won 311 games and three National League Cy Young Awards across 20 seasons. The Mets' right-hander helped win the 1969 World Series and entered the Hall of Fame in 1992. Dave Roberts pitched for eight major-league clubs from 1969 through 1981, winning 103 games. The left-hander joined Pittsburgh's 1979 World Series championship team and later coached college baseball in West Virginia. Astros right-hander for all nine of his big-league seasons, Don Wilson threw two no-hitters and made the 1971 All-Star team before his death in 1975 at age 29.
