The story on this card
Fergie Jenkins led the 1971 National League with 24 wins, and #93 pairs him with Steve Carlton, Al Downing and Tom Seaver, who each won 20. Jenkins went 24-13 with 30 complete games in 325 innings and took the Cy Young Award. Carlton was 20-9 for St. Louis, Downing 20-9 for the Dodgers with a league-leading five shutouts, and Seaver 20-10 with a 1.76 ERA. Seaver finished second in the Cy Young voting and Downing third. The Cardinals traded Carlton to the Phillies for Rick Wise in February 1972.
Fergie Jenkins was the control artist at the front of the Cubs rotation, winning 20 games in six straight seasons and the 1971 National League Cy Young Award on his way to 284 wins, 3,192 strikeouts and a 1991 Hall of Fame plaque. Phillies left-hander Steve Carlton included martial arts and meditation in his training. One exercise involved twisting his fist down through a five-gallon bucket of rice. He worked with trainer Gus Hoefling on his conditioning routine. Al Downing was a Yankees left-hander who led the American League in strikeouts in 1964 and made the 1967 All-Star team, then won 20 games for the Dodgers in 1971 and gave up Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run in 1974. Tom Seaver won 311 games and three National League Cy Young Awards across 20 seasons. The Mets' right-hander helped win the 1969 World Series and entered the Hall of Fame in 1992.
