1972 Topps #18 Juan Pizarro

About Juan Pizarro
Chicago called Pizarro up from Triple-A Tacoma in July 1971 and used him mainly as a starter. On August 1 he went the distance at Shea Stadium in a 3-2 win over the Mets, and four days later he shut out San Diego on one hit at Wrigley Field. His 1972 Topps #18, in the first series, exists in two printings, the common one and a Green Under C and S version. He went 4-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 1972.
Juan Roman Pizarro Cordova, a hard-throwing left-hander born February 7, 1937, in Santurce, Puerto Rico, signed with the Milwaukee Braves in February 1956 and reached the majors in May 1957 at twenty years old. He pitched in the World Series that fall for a Milwaukee club that beat the Yankees, and he pitched in the 1958 Series as well, which New York won. In December 1960 Milwaukee shipped him to Cincinnati, which passed him straight along to the Chicago White Sox. In Chicago he was an American League All-Star in 1963 and again in 1964, when he won 19 games for a club that finished one game behind New York. A torn triceps tendon in his pitching shoulder limited him in 1965, and from 1966 on he worked mainly in relief, closing out an 18-season, eight-team career in 1974. Nicknamed Terin as a boy, after neighborhood kids decided he looked like the hero of the comic strip Terry and the Pirates, he was also one of the most successful pitchers in Puerto Rican Winter League history and one of the first ten men inducted into the Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Fame. He died in 2021.
