1972 Topps #29 Bill Bonham

About Bill Bonham
Bonham's 1972 Topps card, #29 in the first series, is his rookie card and shows him with the Chicago Cubs. His 1971 rookie year was 33 appearances, two of them starts, with a 2-1 record and a 4.65 ERA. He struck out 41 in 60 innings. The card exists in two printings, one with yellow and one with green under the C and S of the team name.
Bill Bonham was a right-handed pitcher from Glendale, California, who worked ten seasons in the National League, 1971 through 1980, seven with the Chicago Cubs and three with the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubs signed him as a free agent for a $2,000 bonus after he was drafted three times without signing and went unselected following his senior year at UCLA. He began in the bullpen and moved into the Cubs rotation in 1974, when he was the Opening Day starter, threw his first shutout and struck out 191 batters, but lost 22 games, one of three National League 20-game losers that year. On July 31, 1974, he struck out four batters in one inning. Chicago traded him to Cincinnati on October 31, 1977, for Woodie Fryman, Bill Caudill and cash. He finished 75-83 with a 4.01 ERA and 985 strikeouts in 300 games.
