About Glenn Beckert In Action
Beckert turns up on three first-series cards in 1972. #45 is his Cubs card, found in a common printing and one with green under the C and S of CUBS, and #46 is his In Action card. #85, the National League batting leaders card, also shows Joe Torre and Ralph Garr. In the 1972 season he hit .270 with 128 hits and 43 RBI.
Glenn Beckert became the Chicago Cubs' second baseman in 1965, stepping into the job after the sudden death of Ken Hubbs. A Pittsburgh native who played college ball at Allegheny College before the Red Sox signed him and the Cubs drafted him away, Beckert spent nine seasons at the position, playing alongside shortstop Don Kessinger and third baseman Ron Santo. He was a difficult batter to strike out, leading the National League in fewest strikeouts per at-bat five times, and in 1968 he led the league in runs scored and won a Gold Glove. Beckert made four straight All-Star teams from 1969 through 1972, and his best offensive season came in 1971, when he hit .342 to finish third in the batting race. After the 1973 season the Cubs traded him to the San Diego Padres, where he closed out his career as a utility infielder before his release in 1975. He finished with 1,473 hits and a .283 career average over 11 seasons, and he is an inductee of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.
