1972 Topps #258 Randy Hundley

About Randy Hundley
Back from knee surgery, Hundley led National League catchers in 1972 with a .995 fielding percentage. He caught two no-hitters that year, Burt Hooton's on April 16 and Milt Pappas's on September 2, and hit a grand slam off Don Carrithers on June 20. Phil Regan said, "He's not only our catcher, he's our leader." His #258, from the second series, lists him with the Cubs.
Randy Hundley caught for the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins, and San Diego Padres across fourteen big-league seasons from 1964 to 1977. Signed by the Giants out of Virginia, he was traded to Chicago before the 1966 season and quickly became the Cubs' everyday catcher, setting durability records behind the plate while introducing a one-handed catching style that later catchers adopted. He won a Gold Glove in 1967 and earned an All-Star selection in 1969, the year Chicago held first place for months before fading late. Knee injuries in the early 1970s slowed him, and he finished his playing career with brief stops in Minnesota and San Diego before returning to the Cubs. He later managed in the minor leagues and founded baseball fantasy camps for adult fans.
