About Stan Williams

Williams finished 1971 in St. Louis, where he went 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA in ten relief appearances. One of the wins came at the Mets on September 27. #9, a first-series card, has him with the Cardinals, who ended 90-72 in second place in the National League East. His 1972 in the majors was three games for the Red Sox, with a 6.23 ERA, and his last major league game came on August 1, before a return to the minors.

Stanley Wilson Williams was a hard-throwing right-hander who pitched 14 major-league seasons, 1958 through 1972, for the Dodgers, Yankees, Indians, Twins, Cardinals, and Red Sox. Born in Enfield, New Hampshire, on September 14, 1936, he was three when the family moved to Denver, and the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him out of East High School in 1954, when he was 17. He reached Los Angeles in May 1958 at 21. Listed at 6-foot-5, with a fastball he was happy to run inside, he answered to "Big Daddy" for his size and strength and to "the Big Hurt" for his habit of moving hitters off the plate. He was an All-Star in 1960, his only such season, and won a career-high 15 games in 1961, while walking more than 100 batters, part of the command trouble that followed him through his career. He finished 109-94 with a 3.48 ERA and 1,305 strikeouts, and he never allowed an earned run in postseason play. He won a World Series ring with the 1959 Dodgers and a second as pitching coach of the 1990 Reds, one of 14 coaching seasons across five clubs. Williams scouted into his 70s, entered the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, and died in 2021 at 84.
