1972 Topps #278 Dennis Higgins

About Dennis Higgins
Higgins changed organizations twice in five days in July 1971, going from Cleveland's system to Oakland's and then to the Cardinals' Triple-A club at Tulsa. His seven innings for St. Louis that year produced a 1-0 record and a 3.86 ERA. His #278 card in the third series of 1972 Topps shows him as a Cardinal. He pitched 15 times for St. Louis in 1972, going 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA. His last major league game came on August 26.
Dennis Dean Higgins was a right-handed relief pitcher from Jefferson City, Missouri, who signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1958 and spent eight full seasons in their farm system before reaching the majors in 1966. He led the Washington Senators in saves in both 1968 and 1969 and later led the Cleveland Indians in both games pitched and saves during his lone season there in 1970. In 1969 he set career highs with ten wins and sixteen saves for first-year Washington manager Ted Williams. A multiplayer trade in February 1968 sent him from Chicago to Washington, and another multiplayer deal in December 1969 sent him on to Cleveland. He closed out his career with brief stints in the St. Louis Cardinals organization in 1971 and 1972. Over seven big-league seasons he compiled a 22-23 record with a 3.42 ERA and 46 saves, almost all in relief.
