1972 Topps #200 Lou Brock

About Lou Brock
Brock batted .311 with 193 hits and 63 stolen bases for St. Louis in 1972. He led the National League in singles and steals. That year he began using a 'rolling start' on steal attempts instead of concentrating on the longest possible lead. His Cardinals card was 1972 Topps #200, from the second series.
Lou Brock collected 3,023 hits and stole 938 bases in 19 major league seasons with the Cubs and Cardinals. He signed with Chicago in 1960 after playing at Southern University, then spent most of his career as St. Louis' left fielder. His preparation included filming opposing pitchers with an 8-mm camera, which he bought in late 1964 to study their pickoff moves. A six-time All-Star, Brock won eight National League stolen-base titles and finished with a .293 batting average and 1,610 runs. He helped St. Louis win the 1964 and 1967 World Series, and over three Series, including 1968, he batted .391 and stole a record 14 bases. His 3,000th hit came against his former club on August 13, 1979, a line drive off Cubs pitcher Dennis Lamp. He retired after that season, and the Cardinals retired his number 20. Brock was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 on his first ballot. His career stolen-base total remained the major league record until Rickey Henderson passed it in 1991.
