1972 Topps #199 Mike Fiore

About Mike Fiore
Fiore spent all of 1971 with the Red Sox, hitting .177 in 51 games. He played eight complete games and appeared in 43 others as a pinch-hitter or late-inning replacement. His 1972 Topps card, #199 in the second series, shows him with Boston. On March 20, 1972, after a pulled back muscle cost him spring training time, Boston traded him to St. Louis for outfielder Bob Burda.
Michael Gary Joseph Fiore, a Brooklyn native and Lafayette High School star, signed with the New York Mets in 1962 before Baltimore claimed him in the first-year player draft. A left-handed-hitting first baseman, he spent five years in the Orioles' system, twice losing time to military duty, before debuting in the majors in September 1968. Kansas City selected him in the expansion draft that fall, and he became the Royals' first-string first baseman in 1969, hitting the first home run in franchise history. He later played for Boston, St. Louis and San Diego, closing his major-league career in July 1972. Fiore then played Triple-A ball through 1978 and finished with a .991 career fielding percentage across all levels. He later spent about 20 years as a dispatcher in the school transportation department in Mineola, New York.
