1972 Topps #113 Rogelio Moret

About Rogelio Moret
Card #113, from the first series, shows Moret with the Red Sox. He went 4-3 with a 2.92 ERA in 1971. He pitched in 13 games, seven of them starts, and had four complete games with a shutout. Boston used him in two stretches that year around an 11-8 season at Pawtucket. His first 1971 win was a complete game at Anaheim on August 28, and he closed the year 4-1. In 1972 he pitched in three games for the Red Sox and spent most of the season at Louisville.
Roger Moret was a tall, thin Puerto Rican left-hander from Guayama who pitched in the majors from 1970 to 1978 for the Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers. He signed with Boston out of high school in 1968 and threw a quick fastball with a decent curve and a good changeup. He went 36-15 in his three full seasons with Boston, 1973 to 1975, and led the American League in winning percentage in 1975 (.824). On August 21, 1974, he threw a one-hit shutout against the White Sox, the only hit an infield single by Dick Allen in the seventh. Boston traded him to Atlanta, and a year later the Braves sent him to Texas. His career record was 47-27 with a 3.66 ERA and 12 saves. He later pitched in the Mexican League and died in Guayama in 2020.
