About this card

Cards #85-96 are the twelve League Leaders cards: the 1971 leaders in batting, runs batted in, home runs, earned run average, pitching and strikeouts, one card per league in each category with the National League card first, and three or four players on each card (#93 names four).

The story on this card

Harmon Killebrew's 119 RBI for the Twins headed the 1971 American League board on 1972 Topps #88, with Frank Robinson of the Orioles at 99 and Reggie Smith of the Red Sox at 96. Killebrew drove in those runs in the season he hit his 500th home run, off Baltimore's Mike Cuellar on August 10. Robinson's 99 came alongside 28 home runs for an Orioles club that won its third straight pennant. Smith's 96 came with 30 home runs, the best season total of his Boston years to that point.

Harmon Killebrew was the Twins' quiet, powerfully built slugger of the 1960s, a six-time American League home run champion who hit more homers in the decade than anyone else and won the 1969 AL Most Valuable Player award. Frank Robinson - Cincinnati's 1961 National League MVP, then Baltimore's 1966 American League Triple Crown winner, MVP and World Series MVP after one of baseball's most lopsided trades; nicknamed "the Judge," he later became the majors' first Black manager. A switch-hitting outfielder with a cannon arm, Reggie Smith made seven All-Star teams and reached four World Series over a 17-year career with Boston, St. Louis, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
